Before you begin here are a few questions to ask yourself.
Do I have at least one - two hours a week to spare from the end of March to the beginning of October?
Do I have a safe, secure site where the bees flight path will not be a nuisance to neighbours?
Will I be able to afford all the extra kit, books and innovations that I may want and do I have space for it? Will my partner / family agree that this is the case?
If you answer yes to all the above, you may have what it takes to become a beekeeper and joining one of our taster sessions is an easy way to start.
Taster sessions take place between 10am - 12 noon or 1p.m. - 3p.m. and cover basic information such as the components of the hive, the different castes of bee within the colony and include opening a hive and handling the bees if you wish.
All protective clothing is provided by us although stout shoes are advisable. Also bring a pair of ordinary washing up gloves which you are comfortable in.
Advice on siting your hive, essential equipment and its cost, the honey harvest and the importance of regular inspections will all be discussed.
The session would normally close with a cup of tea or coffee and an informal chat during which any further questions you may have will be answered.
No more than four people will be at any session. We can only do these lessons on warm, sunny days so please be prepared to wait for such a day.
Price per person £35, this will be refunded if you choose to purchase a hive from Beeworthy Hives. Gift Vouchers available, call or email for more information and dates.
